My fitness journey started back in 1995, I was at my heaviest weight; 115 kg, 23yrs old, high blood cholesterol, gout and pre-diabetic! You could say I needed to make some changes. I started exercising (aerobics mainly) and made changes to my food, not exactly what I would recommend today but compared to where I was it was a 100 per cent better. I lost 25 kg in ten weeks, became fitter, healthier and definitely happier. That started my interest in the fitness industry, if I could lose 25kg in ten weeks without really knowing anything about health and physical activity, imagine what I could do if I learned more? Here I am now! I have worked in a small town (Dannevirke), Brisbane, Palmerston Nth and Nelson. I have had many roles from group fitness manager through to Personal Training manager and have delivered numerous workshops for Les Mills and Cityfitness.
I’m the co director of WBCS and currently co – design and deliver sessions; I run Fit Flamingoes on behalf of the Nelson Regional Breast and Gynaecological Trust. I also have a passion for Obstacle Course Racing, I’m the club president for the Wairua Warriors OCR club and Head Coach. As a club – we organise the Wairua Warrior Obstacle Course race and have raised over $15,000 for our supported charity – Life Education Trust.
That’s a lot about me! So how can I help you…? I can help you achieve far more than you think you’re capable of and I’ll dare you to strive further. I’ll help you find the strength and ability to endure.
If I could give you one tip for healthy living I would borrow it from Mark Devine, author of The Unbeatable Mind; break everything down to bite size chunks, no matter how big the situation or issue is; if you focus on the whole situation, more often than not, you get disgruntled with the complexity of the situation and don’t know where to start. Focus on the first step only, when you overcome that then focus on the next and so on. You never conquer a mountain by looking at the summit, you conquer it by looking at one step after another.

Darryl has an extensive background as an educator, coach, trainer, presenter, and facilitator.
He studied Physical Education at Otago University followed by Teachers College, and after graduating he taught at secondary school level for several years, during this entire time he worked part time at gyms as he had always enjoyed health and fitness. As the industry grew he eventually transitioned into working in the sector full time.
Along with working within clubs as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer, including coaching, training and mentoring his peers, he’s also worked at management level and travelled extensively, presenting at workshops and facilitating training modules for fitness professionals both within New Zealand and overseas.
He’s recently re-located to his home town of Nelson from a corporate position in Australia, and although he still works with that company, now that he’s home he’s decided to get back to the grass roots of the fitness game and dedicate some of his time to training and coaching people to help improve their lives. After checking out the various fitness facilities in town he found that the culture, feel, and people at Wairua best suited his philosophies around training.
Darryl is available to train individuals as well as small groups, and on occasion he may well pop up leading one of the timetabled sessions at Wairua. He has also brought the Taste Success nutrition programme to Wairua, a natural weight loss and well-being programme which he facilitates. If you’re interested in what Darryl has to offer, feel free to contact him for a complimentary consultation/training session.
